Johor Trip -Day 2 | Legoland

On the second day, we started our journey early to Legoland. It took us around 40-45 mins to reach Legoland from our hotel. We parked just outside the Legoland entrance which is still free parking for the time being, but you can expect them to start collecting parking fees once they finished their construction on everything. The whole place was already so crowded when we reach.
Look the the tickets counters, luckily we got the tickets from hotel, save time on queuing.

Long story short, why don't you look at some of the photos we took from Legoland? It certainly say alot more than I can, but still I couldn't manage to post all of them in the blog; it's simply just too much. I highlighted some nicer ones.

Technic Twister - Your modern day "twisting cups"

Aquawave Zone Racers - Basically you just sit in the boats that go round and round in the water while people who are watching you can press some "water canons" that blast some water in the air and try to get everyone (including themselves) wet!

Project X
First ride of the day, waited about 1 hour to get to our turn. For those who are new to theme parks, I seriously, seriously suggest that you must apply sunblock ALL THE TIME. we were waiting around 11 a.m. and it was enough to cause us sunburn. Lucky thing we brought some umbrellas.... which you might want to bring as well...

Dragon Apprentice
Second ride of the day, right after the Project X, while waiting in line for this it started raining heavily! The operators had to stop the ride and we waited the rain to clear up, so, another hour went by here.

In front Build and Test Centre

Lego keychains

Of course, you would expect tons of Lego souvenirs that you can buy here. But be warned, they are somewhat in the Singapore's Universal Studios price range -- After converting the items into SGD they cost much or less the same price as the souvenirs you find in USS... nevertheless we bought a few as mementos.

Since we wanted to spend more time enjoying the theme park, we decided to have lunch inside Legoland rather than having outside. We went Pizza Mania for lunch which is one of the two restaurants in Legoland. Otherwise, you can choose to go outside of Legoland into the mall area beside, just remember to get some sort of a stamp for you to get back in.

We ordered the set meals which includes a main dish, a drink and a soup. Bear in mind that, food in Legoland is not cheap.

Pizza Set-RM28

Basically its your average Hawaiian chicken pizza on a thin crust. Still okay I would say, but I taste no passion in the pizza; none of that usual Italian flair you would expect... and for that price, ah well, we're in Legoland so we can't really complain.

Spaghetti Set-RM24
Its seafood spaghetti mixed with marinara sauce. Noodles were quite hard and tasteless, but the only good thing about it is that the portion is big.

As you can see, it was raining the whole day we were there... what luck! I would prefer it to be sunny and we have sunburn, rather than to bring umbrellas and try not to get wet all the time. Plus after a while, you get sweaty and everything just gets, ummm, uncomfortable.

So since you're wet, why not go for this ride??? Seems fun, but we didn't try it 'cause we just didn't feel like it.

Here is the second restaurant, you probably won't have trouble finding it as you can get the maps in the entrance. This place serves conventional western food like Chicken Chop, Fish and Chips, I would come and try out this place the next time we're here.

Lots of mini figures for you to take pics and admire. It almost feels like you're a treasure hunter here to discover those different figures, rather than to take the rides.

In my opinion, the thing that is worth visiting Legoland for is their miniature worlds. I mean, that is what Lego really represents for right? Building things! And here we can see these cities from around the world recreated with great detail. You ought to spend quite some time here admiring the mini details of every city. Be prepared to take lots and lots of pics! But if it wasn't because of the rain, we might have taken more pics...

Thailand, Bali, China, Taj Mahal, Angkor Wat...etc etc.

And this is the Pirates of the Caribbean

KLIA

So cute!

Nearing the end of the day, we came to watch a show here at the City Stage. It's free for admission, you just have to be there on the scheduled time. If you want, you can arrive there around 15 mins earlier to get a good spot in the front so you can really enjoy the show.

Behold, the Magic House!

Basically, the show is meant for young children in which they teach children how to be aware of everyday dangers and avoid them (this is at the time of writing, they might change the show in the future...).

*Gasp*! The show is about to start!

In the prelude to the show, a lady comes out and performs some great moves on a rope, and without a safety rope or anything. She's really skilled, be sure not to blink your eyes!

The host of the show, or as he calls himself, the Danger Detective! What a delightful personality he has, sure did set the enthusiastic tone for the audience.

And here are the cadets who will be working hard to earn their own titles as Danger Detectives! I would not reveal too much here, just enjoy the show!

Boy, look at the stunts they can pull of without any assistance. Just the plain ol' acrobatics!

After the show, we went around and tried some rides we have yet to try, this is the ''Racers 4D'' which is a large theater with an animated movie, and some effects, but no moving chairs though. You get what I mean... I just couldn't stop comparing this to the Shrek ride in USS... at the very least, Shrek did caught me by surprise in the first few moments.

The last ride we went to was the revolving tower. A nice place to look all over Legoland while enjoying some air-conditioning.

Lastly, the largest Christmas Tree made by Legos! They certainly did seal off the area so no one could mess with the tree and possibly make it collapse!

Overall, Legoland is a nice place to go to, but I would recommend that you wait some time later this year or in 2014 to visit this place. There's still a lot of construction going on in the surrounding area, and I certainly felt like the theme park could be much more better. Nevertheless, the main purpose of me visiting Legoland was to admire the miniature cities, and I was pleasantly surprised by the level of detail that went into building them. But if your purpose was to ride exciting rides and have a blast of a time, I'd guess you'd be better off going to USS instead.

747 Cafe | Jalan Transfer

I have been searching for this restaurant for quite a while since they moved from YMCA, and fortunately I found it during my last trip back to Penang. I was told that YMCA increased their rent, so they decided not to renew their contract and moved here. But they are planing to move again, to Yesterday Club after 15th February 2013.

The place they rented is much more spacious compare to YMCA building, as it is a two storey buiding. However, the most difficult part for drivers is that there are no parking lots provided. It is exactly at the main road where cars are zooming in and out. That's why you see here are the cars parking on the road side but be warned: you park at your own risk and if you get saman-ed, please don't say I didn't warn you =).

You can see that the interior is much more brighter and modern.

Let's look at the food. Since three of us were there only, we can't order too much food. So, I ordered some of their well-known and popular dishes.
Inchi Kabin- RM15
On the outside it really looks like regular fried chicken (and maybe slightly dry even...), but I was pleasantly surprised by the taste and the juiciness of the meat. It is as though they have marinated it for days! It's full of flavour, a very complex flavour; somewhat like the five-spices combined with cintan manis plus many many more layers you might discover as you eat. So you really don't want to miss this; for the price and the portion, I think it's fairly reasonable.

Curry Fish Head-RM42
This dish actually came last. First thought that came into mind: BIG! No wonder the person who took our order wouldn't recommend us to order more, because this portion is pretty large and it's enough to serve about four, maybe five persons. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you view it...), the size is fixed no matter how many persons are dining. The taste? Lot's of soup for you to enjoy, its sour and spicy. The fish meat is cooked just nice, not too hard, and although its quite fresh, I did wish that the meat would be slightly more fresher, then the dish would be perfect!

Stir Fried Broccoli-RM10
The photo above is about half the portion as we ate some of it already, we forgot to take pics, oopps! The dish tastes great, the gravy is actually “上汤" (soup) stir-fried together with the vegetables which makes it delicious; not like the average garlic stir-fried that we're used to.

We paid the bill and they returned our change in this plate. My, how long have it been since I last saw these kind of plates? Certainly brought back some nostalgic memories of childhood.

Anyway, for those who are interested in having their Chinese New Year reunion dinner here, they are open on 9th February and their menu is a one set course meal only. I would urge you to faster give them a call and make a booking, as there might not be many tables left. Nevertheless, its a good place to have dinner in case you're in Penang, and I'll be sure to come back and review their new place once they have moved.

Western Food @ Kota Selera Food Court, Penang

I used to come over here when I was working in Penang. I still come over here now whenever I have the chance. The food court is just beside Fort Conwallis, very easily to be spotted. There are two stalls that you must try out which are the Mee Sotong (Indian Mee) and the Chinese's Western Food.

Coconut Milkshake-RM 2.80
The famous drink here, it is very special. They mix the coconut drink with ice-cream, cooling drink for a hot day.

The next one I like to introduce you is this Western Food. They serve not only Western Food but also other Chinese local food like fried rice, fried hokkien mee and etc. I love the most is their Fish n Chips with their own tartar sauce.
As you can see, the stall is hardly noticeable and it would seem like the food doesn't taste nice. But trust me, most of the people order from this stall only!

Fish n Chips-RM 7.50
The deep fried fish fillet taste very good, crunchy and juicy. The Fish n Chips come with fries, baked beans and vegetables, very simple yet delicious. With their own tartar sauce on top, you just cant resist and always come back for more. Furthermore, the uncle always give me extra tartar sauce as you can see in the picture; one full bowl of it! You wouldn't normally request for extra sauce when you come here.

Chicken Chop-RM 7.50
I've eaten many, many chicken chops in my life but I would say this one is ranking quite high among them. The chicken is fried, but is not oily. The brown sauce is added with tomatoes which adds some zing to the dish. By the time I finish this, I was wondering whether I should order one more plate... :)

Besides the western food, there is the Mee Sotong that I did not manage to order it because there were too many people on that day. I will try my luck next time and hopefully I will be able to upload it again. Overall, I love their food although it is just inside an old Food Court.

Johor Trip Day 1 | Johor Premium Outlet

During the Matta Fair in September of 2012, we have booked a package to Johor Legoland inclusive of hotel lodging for our December trip. We went one week before Christmas to avoid the Christmas crowd. On the way to Johor city, we made sure to stop by Johor Premium Outlet for some shopping. As many of you may know, Johor Premim Outlet is the first premium outlet in Malaysia and I am sure many of you have visited the place on its opening day; and I am only here now, kinda outdated. Anyway, I was told by my bf that the concept and design is about the same as the Premium Outlets in U.S. except that this is much more smaller. Let us see how small it is then.

How to go from Kuala Lumpur:
Kuala Lumpur → Lebuhraya Utara Selatan → Lebuhraya Hubungan Kedua Malaysia Singapura → Exit 253 → Exit 304 → Exit 302A → Johor Premium Outlets

GPS 1°36'11"N , 103°37'17"E

Here is the directory, you can view from here too. There are 80 outlet stores here in this 2 storey building.

I had a look in most of the stores available there. All items sold there are mostly outdated items around 3-4 seasons ago. The price wasn't attractive as I thought especially for KL people. I guess too many warehouse sales in KL spoil the fun shopping here, I can find much more newer and cheaper items there rather than in JPO.

The Coach Outlet is the only store that you might need to be queue to go in. If you are aiming for coach, I guess you can get good deal here. Most of the prices are slashed around 40%-50%.

Nike store have nothing to shout about, the prices are still the same as normal price. I rather wait for Nike or Al-Ikhsan warehouse sales in KL. I see most people come out from the Nike store with an empty hand. Then, I went to visit the Timberland Outlet, the price was quite reasonable; however, one day before the trip we went to Timberland warehouse sale in TTDI, we got a much better price on the exact same items. :P
If you are planing to shop for higher brand like Fossil, Timberland, Coach, Burberry, CK and others. It do offer good price. For example, I bought a fossil watch for 60% off. There are also other special discounts offer for Christmas time for some outlets.

Actually, my main purpose here is not on the shopping but on the FOOD! Yes, food always follow where ever I go. I heard that there is a good restaurant in JPO called the George and Dragon Cafe located at ground floor beside coffee bean, very near to Padini store.
"George & Dragon Café is a touch of England reflecting a time gone past. It is unique in Johor for its food, wine and old world ambience. First Established in 2002 in Taman Tasek, Johor Bahru, George & Dragon Café has now extended its business with the opening of a second branch in Johor Premium Outlets, Kulaijaya. George & Dragon Café offers simple yet tasty dishes in an old world ambience. It is the culmination of simple creative ideas, founded in design, historical value and a passion for food and wine."

Menu for JPO outlet, you can click here for the full menu.

The whole place is decorated like the medieval ages, very cosy and warm atmosphere... almost to the extent of "romantic" I would say. I guess in JPO, this restaurant is one of the few places you might be interested in taking some pictures. All other places are just stores for you to shop.

Special dish of the week
While waiting for our food, bf was playing with his camera to capture the effects of candle light blasting. :)

Chicken & Mushroom Pizza-RM 28
This is one of their signature dishes, you can actually see the big photo outside their wall for their advertisement, so you won't miss it. It is a oven-baked 10" thin crust pizza with tomato and cheese, topped with freshly grilled chicken. mushroom and capsicum. Although the ingredients of meat and mushroom weren't much but the tomato sauce made the whole pizza so delicious, and best was the thin crust base that tastes like nacho snacks. Thumbs up!

Pan Seared Fish with Orange Butter Sauce- RM26
A pan seared fish fillet and dressed with Orange Butter Sauce, served with fresh vegetables and potatoes wedges. One word to describe this dish: Marvellous!  I love how they pan sear the fish and still retained the freshness of the fish. Orange butter sauce cooked together with the fish just makes you unable to resist this temptation. I never thought orange could make a savoury dish that delicious. The portion wasn't that big but good food always come in small amounts. Thumbs up!

You will never regret for trying it out here. I will sure come back again!
A big Santa Claus near the entrance to welcome you!

During Matta fair, we booked the package directly from Hotel Sentral Johor, just a normal 3-star hotel. So, you can't expect a 5-star service there. Have a look at the room and toilet, overall is clean. But I would recommend to stay in other hotels if it is possible as you really would not like the way they handle things, not friendly at all, especially the reception and the cafe. I'll explain later.

We got our Legoland passes from the hotel which are included in the package. This made our trip much more easier as we do not need to queue up to buy tickets.

At night, we went to their famous local food court for dinner. I read that there is a must visit stall within the food court: Ikan Bakar! I wasn't a fan of ikan bakar but since it is famous I shouldn't miss this out.

This is the stall named Ikan Bakar Sin Kee, located around the end of the food court. I noticed that most of the tables ordered at least one plate of Ikan Bakar. So, can you miss it?

We placed the order from the stall and we were given a number to wait for our dish. Bear in mind, you may need to wait a little longer for the food to be served since there will be quite a queue. We waited for more than 30 minutes. In the meanwhile, you can order other smaller appetizers to fill up your stomach while waiting.

Ikan Bakar
The stingray is fresh and juicy, the grilling method did not take away its juicy part. The best is the spicy sauce grilled together, not very spicy (mild), just nice for us to eat with the rice.

Grilled vegetables
Again they use the same spicy sauce to cook with the vegetables. Nice!
I can assure you will never regret for ordering this. Total we paid for RM25 only including 2 bowl of rice.

Besides, we did also try out their famous pork satay there. Big juicy chunky pork meat satay, nice! If I am not mistaken it is RM 0.60 per piece.

Another must try food is the Ayam Bakar Hong Kee. The owner is very friendly when taking our order. It cost RM1.60 per piece. By the way, they only sell chicken wings, but for these juicy chicken wings, it doesn't matter!

Tauhu Bakar-RM 2.50 (per piece) Photo above is 2 pieces.
I accidentally saw this stall in front of our table while still waiting for our Ikan Bakar, we ordered their Tauhu Bakar. I can't believe I can still taste so delicious tauhu bakar. I never found a good one in KL nor Penang and I have almost given up on it. The fried Tauhu is so crispy and even with the rojak sauce on, it didn't turn soggy. I love it!

This place is definitely a place I would recommend to all if you come over to Johor. I guess the locals are probably the ones who know the place since I saw most of the parking are occupied by cars with Johor car plates. The location is quite near to KSL city mall, if I'm not mistaken it is just behind of it.
